Winnipeg is the third
biggest city in Canada, and the capital of Manitoba Province. It
is situated at the joint point of the Assinibaine River and the
Red River, 97 kilometers away from the American borderline. Its
area covers 663 square kilometers. The population here is 600 thousand.
The climate is dry and cold, with the temperature as low as -30¡ãC
to -50¡ãC in the winter.
100 years ago, when a railroad crossing the Canadian continent
was built through Winnipeg, the city became prosperous. Only after
several years, Winnipeg became the important grain market in the
world and the biggest industrial and business city and the finance
and insurance center of western Canada. The major industries include
flour processing, meat and food processing, printing, brewing,
clothing, automobile and farming machine manufacturing. Winnipeg
is the cultural center of the Manitoba Province.
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Corps de
Ballet and the Manitoba Theater Center enjoy high reputation in
Canada. The Manitoba University and the Winnipeg University are
very famous in Canada. The Century Center consists of The Natural
and Human Museum and the Planetarium which are very important
to the life of people in Winnipeg. Winnipeg hosts the International
Folk Art Festival every year. The Winnipeg Lake not far away from
north Winnipeg is formed at the connecting point of many rivers,
and the water from which goes in the Hudson Harbor through Nelson
River. It possesses uniquely good condition for sailing and fishing
and it is famous tourism resort as well.
In 1980, Winnipeg and Chengdu were concluded as sister cities.
